We’re 10 days into our stay in CDMX (Ciudad de Mexico) and after a stint with some unhappy bellies, we’re taking the city by storm!
Somehow, in a city more than double the size of NYC, things feel slow and easy and vibrant all the same. Here’s what we’ve been up to since we last wrote…
Spanish Classes
We’ve started Spanish classes at the neighborhood language school. We’ve been there three hours a day, 9am-noon, each weekday.
There, we’ve made friends with travelers from all over the world who find themselves in Mexico City to savor the art, culture, food, and pace of life.
Centro Histórico
On Saturday, we explored the historic center of Mexico City with a new friend from language school. We popped into fabric stores, discovered parks & gardens, listened to pounding indigenous drums in the Zócalo (central square), and toured the Metropolitan Cathedral.
We started the day early, and thank goodness we did, because by 2pm the streets were so packed it was hard to even walk.
Café de Tacuba has been in business for 110 years. We ate amazing enchiladas verdes and chilaquiles while listening to live mariachi music.
Mexico City is full of beautiful, small details. Colorful tiles, intricate carvings, hidden alleyways, a secret book market.
New Routines
We found a Sunday organic market where we’ve been buying incredible produce, eggs, and jams. This week, we came home with locally made pear jam, a massive bunch of purple basil, sourdough bread, sweet purple tomatoes, and a bag full of veggies all for around $300 pesos or $15 usd.
Jazz Night
We spent a rainy evening at Jazzatlan, the local jazz club, where the floor is decorated with treble clefs…
The Parks
The parks and plants are some of our favorite parts of Mexico City so far. A big difference: here, the signs in the parks are hopeful.
They don’t tell you about the rules - what’s forbidden or against the law. Instead, they’re really lovely…
Hummingbird Update
We’ve identified our little friends at the feeder as male Broad-Billed Hummingbirds.
They’re quite territorial & we often see fights around the feeder, but we love them still!
With love,
Anna + Bennett
Thanks for the post! I can’t wait to visit Mexico City!!
